Astro Seminar: "The Challenge of Predicting the Clustering of Matter in the Era of High-Precision Cosmology"

- | David Rittenhouse Laboratory, A6

In the future a new generation of galaxy surveys will probe the cosmic distribution of matter across an unprecedented range of scales and redshifts potentially shedding new light on the nature of the invisible components in
the universe such as Dark Energy and Dark Matter. Key to the success of these programs is the availability of accurate theoretical model predictions. In this talk I will review the challenge posed by non-linearities in the late-time clustering of matter and present results on the non-linear modifications of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from large-volume high-resolution N-body simulations. I will also discuss the impact of non-linearities on the power spectrum covariance matrix as determined from a large ensemble of simulations and show that the resulting non-Gaussian features will directly impact the statistical analysis of future survey data unless they are accounted for.
