Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: "Non-thermal pathways to quantum matter "

Quantum materials host a wide range of phenomena that challenge our physical understanding while offering intriguing possibilities for next-generation technologies. A promising direction towards their control and functionalization is to leverage coherent interaction between light and electrons in solids, granting a handle to realize new regimes inaccessible in equilibrium. In this talk, I will discuss approaches and challenges in realizing light-induced phases in quantum materials, by example of tuning the magnetic phase in the strongly spin-orbit coupled Kitaev materials, inducing topological magnetic excitations in ferromagnets, and probing ultrafast domain wall dynamics in topological superconductors. I will also describe how the versatility of twisted van der Waals heterostructures provides new opportunities in controlling matter using light.
