Primakoff Lecture: From (Astro)particle Physics to Applications: The Role of Scientific Institutes for the Development of Society

Rolf Heuer (CERN) Hosted by Joe Kroll
- | David Rittenhouse Laboratory, A8

With the start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, particle physics entered a new era. The LHC project will provide a deeper understanding of the universe and the insights gained could change our view of the world. The talk will present the exciting science prospects as well as the key ingredients and issues for the successful realisation of such large-scale science projects, in particular the development of new, cutting-edge technologies and the training of scientists and engineers of tomorrow. Knowledge as well as Scientific and technological results coming out of this fundamental research can then be promoted in and transferred to society at large.
